Frequently Asked Questions
Why are some of your events for specific groups of people (eg. self-defined women only)?
See our little blurb here. :)
Are your events only for graduate students?
No! Undergrads are welcome to attend. In fact, this society is co-organised by an undergraduate.
Are your events all geared towards the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences?
No! We will be covering material within the purview of the biological sciences, medicine, physical sciences, mathematics, etc. Come and debate the writings of feminist physicists, share with us some of the contributions of female mathematicians, present your work on global warming... If you have suggestions regarding how to integrate some of the material you're engaging with, please contact us.
Do I have to be extremely knowledgeable in feminist literature to attend these events?
Again, No! We do expect everyone to read any texts sent around, but the whole point is to bring your questions and comments, and to learn from each other's interpretations and responses. Each session will begin with the facilitator summarising the material and introducing key concepts and terminology, so please don't worry. Just come!
I tried to read the text for the reading group and got confused about some/all of it. What do I do?
Show up! Highlight confusing sections, bring questions... If you are wondering about something, chances are someone else is too, and there is probably someone in the group who can offer a great answer or summary. Remember, each session will begin with the facilitator summarising the material and introducing key concepts and terminology. So speak out!
Why should I read feminist theory? Can't I just get that online?
Online resources are great for exploring and broadcasting feminism. However, feminist literature and theory demands we look deeper, and examine our assumptions, our language, our society, our constructs with more vigour and in more detail. Feminist scholars have written truly transformative work and our reading groups are an excellent place in which to hone your skills in understanding and applying their concepts. Note we also read novels and poetry, and watch films!
I have a suggestion for a book/film/topic...
Talk to one of the organisers, send us an email, or contact us via this website. We'd love to hear your ideas.
I have some time this week/month. Can I help out?
We are always looking for people to organise film screenings, poetry nights, etc. If you have a few hours to help out and want to do something with the CamFemSoc, please get in touch.
